During our recent holiday in Matlock, our group of four spent two wonderful days at the award-winning Glendon Bed and Breakfast.
It is a classic, family-owned gem that perfectly balances comfort with unique, personal touches.
The Glendon is nestled in the heart of Matlock, a picturesque market town in Derbyshire.
It is beautifully positioned on the edge of the Peak District, overlooking a stream that feeds into the River Derwent, and sits right next to the lovely Hall Leys Park.
Its location is ideal–within easy walking distance of the bus station, as well as a variety of pubs, local shops, and restaurants.
We were informed beforehand that the B&B provides free parking, offering five on-sites spaces exclusively for guests.
Located at the rear of the property and accessed via Causeway Lane, the parking area even includes an electric vehicle (EV) charging point, which is a fantastic modern convenience.
Upon arrival, we were warmly and politely greeted at the door by the owner.
The check-in process was seamless and friendly; he provided us with all the essential information we needed for our stay and handed over our room keys.
When the four of us made our way upstairs, we discovered a guest siting room located nearby.
It is a large, airy, and elegantly decorated space offering two scenic views–one over Knowleston Gardens and another toward St. Giles Church.
Set within a beautifully restored 1857 Victorian villa, it provides a peaceful retreat to relax, unwind, or enjoy the board games and puzzles provided.
After taking a look at the sitting room, we headed to our rooms on the first floor, where my mum and I stayed in a double room.
Every guest bedroom here is individually and beautifully decorated, and our heigh-ceiling room was spotlessly clean.
It was wonderful appointed with:
*An en-suite bathroom stocked with plenty of cotton towels and complimentary Elemis toiletries.
*Luxurious Egyptian cotton lines and a wonderfully comfortable bed.
*A flat-screen TV with Freeview channels.
*Tea and coffee-making facilities.
*A silent mini-fridge stocked with fresh milk, which was replaced daily.
The individually decorated bedrooms are situated across the first and second floors.
Each room is bright and airy, featuring high ceilings and large sash windows that offer a lovely view of the surrounding area.
The bedrooms are thoughtfully designed with contemporary soft furnishings, perfectly combining historic charm with modern conveniences to ensure a comfortable stay.
On the second and third morning of our stay, all four of us came down for breakfast, which is served in a large, bright, and airy dining room.
The hosts had thoughtfully pushed two tables together to comfortably seat the four of us.
Featuring ornate coving and a grand French-style chandelier overhead, it is a truly wonderful room in which to dine.
Breakfast is served from 8am to 9am Monday through Friday, and from 8:30-9:15 AM on weekends and bank holidays.
To start, we were offered our choice of freshly brewed tea, freshly ground coffee, or juice.
We were then each given a menu displaying a fantastic selection of items cooked fresh to order and served directly to the table.
Alongside the hot dishes, there is also a great self-serve selection of cereals, fresh fruit, yogurt, and fruit compote.
The service was expectational: the gentleman who served us was articulate, friendly, and wonderfully knowledgeable.
We also want to extend a big thank you to the woman who took our orders and served our meals with equal care.
Overall, our stay at The Glendon Bed and Breakfast exceeded all expectations.
From the warm hospitality and spotless, comfortable rooms to the delicious locally sourced breakfast and fantastic central location, everything was handled with absolute care.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing weekend getaway or a comfortable base to explore the Peak District, I cannot recommend The Glendon highly enough.
We left feeling thoroughly refreshed and are already looking forward to our next visit!
