Book a Staycation in Derbyshire

29, Jul 2020 | Derbyshire, Matlock, Peak District

Have you booked your Staycation yet?

After a long time, it is lovely to be able to travel again and enjoy a few days away. And it feels like an ideal time to enjoy a Staycation in Derbyshire.

We have been open now three weeks and it has been lovely to welcome guests back to Glendon. As part of our plans for reopening we have made some changes. When making these changes we wanted to do all we could but also maintain a welcoming and relaxing place to stay. Feedback from our guests has been really welcome as they have told us we have achieved this.

“This was our first trip away from home following the Covid19 lockdown- it had to be the Glendon. It was the usual high standard, but with subtle, unobtrusive changes which made us feel safe. We know that Adrian and Damien take the situation seriously but still want you to feel welcome- and we really did. Lovely room, delicious breakfast, lovely surroundings. Adrian and Damien made us welcome as did Matlock. Miller’s and The Red Lion also took care at the same time as welcoming us. Thank you for a few days of “normal.” Safeena July 2020 Gold stars

“A fabulous 2-night stay at Glendon once again, this is just the best guest house, with attention to detail and wonderful hosts! Amazing breakfast and a great location! Spotlessly clean, a real gem!” Karen July 2020 Gold stars

“It was great to be able to get away and we couldn’t imagine anywhere better to stay than a return to Glendon. A lot of work has been done to ensure a covid safe stay without making us feel uncomfortable. Adrian, Damien and the team provide a fantastic environment to relax and unwind, thank you.”

“This was our third stay at Glendon House, and did not disappoint. We were made very welcome from the outset, and, although some changes had to be made due to COVID-19 they were hardly noticeable. The rooms were very comfortable & clean, and the service impeccable. Adrian and Damien do a fantastic job. The breakfast is varied and delicious. Would highly recommend.” Pat July 2020 Gold stars

“This was my second visit to Glendon. I was so pleased to see it open again after lockdown. The owners have taken every care to ensure that their guests are looked after safely. Everywhere is spotlessly clean, the breakfasts are superb and there is space to relax. The attention to detail is very marked, for example, there is a fridge in the bedroom with a ‘proper’ bottle of milk to go with the coffee and the wide range of teas. A friend came to meet me, we sat in the garden and were offered a lovely pot of tea plus a slice of cake each. Highly recommended.” Susan July 2020 Gold stars

Where can I eat out in Matlock?

Over the past 3 weeks the bars and restaurants in Matlock have been reopening. The Thai, Indian and Italian restaurants are all open. Stones, serving an excellent British contemporary menu, is also serving guests again. And to pubs – the Red Lion and Duke William, are also serving food again. All these options are within a few minutes’ walk from Glendon.

What better time is there to enjoy fish and chips but when on holiday? On a nice evening it is lovely to pick up some fish and chips and had into Hall Leys park and enjoy eating outside. One thing there is plenty of in the park are benches!

In addition to the usual restaurants the Remarkable Hare has been refurbished and now offers a great selection of food in a large Brasserie room. The final restaurant to reopen is Herd and that is scheduled for early August. So, there are a good choice of places to eat out.

What attractions are open in Derbyshire?

This week Chatsworth House reopened. The Heights of Abraham and Crich Tramway museum have also reopened along with other attractions. We are still able o to offer discounted tickets for Crich. Some attractions have reopened with different opening hours, so it is worth checking in advance. Many also require booking in advance. Feedback from our guests has been positive about the measures put in place and they have still told us they have enjoyed their visit.

Are there good places to walk in Derbyshire and the Peak District?

The one thing that has not changed in Derbyshire is the varied and many open spaces. From walks in the White Peak or Dark Peak. Walks up hills or down hills. Walking through historic villages or visiting ancient monuments. These are all still there to enjoy. Some walks are in busier areas but the majority can be enjoyed in open spaces passing perhaps just a handful of people on the way. And not forgetting the wonderful landscape and sights of the Peak District National park. From our walks this week it will not be long before the purple heather covers large areas of the landscape. And as we move into September the wonderful autumnal colours start to appear.
