What’s on in Derbyshire and the Peak District in 2018?
The year that is… Derbyshire!
Welcome to 2018. We hope you had a great start to the New Year and are looking forward to 2018. As usual Derbyshire and the Peak District have a range of events during the year. The famous well-dressings that run throughout the summer; the wonderful historical houses and the stunning landscape of the Peak District. Alongside this is a wonderful range of events. Some may be less well known and others are annual favourites…
In the same week as Valentine’s day is the famous Royal Shrovetide Football event takes place in Ashbourne on the 13th and 14th February. It involves two 8-hour periods and the goals are three miles apart! In March Midland Grand National takes place at Uttoxeter racecourse on the 17th, coinciding this year with St Patrick’s day.
After Easter some of the longer events begin. From the 4th to the 13th May is the Derby Film Festival. Derby is a short train ride from Matlock and the event includes feature films and specially selected screenings. From 19th to the 31st May is the National Forest Walking Festival and includes events in the Peak District. The weekend of the 11th to 13th May sees the classic Chatsworth International Horse Trials.
June sees the second RHS Chatsworth Flower Show from the 6th to the 10th. A great event to showcase international and local horticultural talent. From 15th to the 17th June it is the Eroica Britannia festival. A great weekend for people of all ages with music, entertainment, food and drink, shopping and of course the vintage cycle races.
With the warmer summer weather August sees a number of outdoor shows, many with a focus on agriculture. There is the Ashover show on the 8th August, the Bakewell Baking Festival on the 11th and 12th, The Manifold show in Ilam on the 11th; the Ashbourne show on the 18th and Hope show on 27th August. At the end of the month is the spectacular Chatsworth County Fair from the 31st August to the 2nd September.
The Wirksworth Festival runs from the 7th to the 23rd September and is a wonderful showcase for local and national artists. A literary festival with a rang of events, Art Out Loud, runs from the 27th to the 29th September. Derby hosts the folk festival from the 4th to the 7th October, with performances from leading names.
