Things to do on the May Bank Holiday in Derbyshire
Ready, steady, May…..
If you will allow us to start with optimism, we are going to stick our neck out and say the sun will shine in May! Perhaps not all day every day, but looking at the long-range forecast for May, it is looking good. What we can say though with certainty is that so many things take place from May onwards in Derbyshire.
During the May bank holiday is the Hardwick Hall Great British Food Festival. It features the artisan food market, cookery classes for children, the ‘cake off’ and some of our favourite competitors from the Great British Bake Off with cookery demonstrations as well as entertainment. A great day out.
And May also sees the start of the ancient Derbyshire tradition of well-dressings. There is some mystery around the tradition but it is believed it was brought to the area many centuries ago to give thanks for water. The dressings are prepared and displayed throughout many Derbyshire villages and take place from May to September. They are prepared from thousands of flower petals and depict varied scenes each year.
There are also a number of festivals throughout the summer months. Things kick-off with the Belper Arts Festival runs form the end of April through May. It includes music, dance, performances and the wonderful Belper Art Trail, displaying the work of over 130 artists in and around the town centre.
And then of course there is the wonderful landscape of the Peak District. From hills to edges, to stunning views to the historical site of the Ladybower dam. And in June this year as part of the wonderful Eroica Britannia festival there is a flypast of the historical Lancaster Bomber over the dam.
So, why not treat yourself to a few days away in Derbyshire. And we would love to welcome you to stay at Glendon.
