Kissing gate in the Peak District

Kissing gates are designed to allow only one person to pass through at a time. They also prevent livestock from escaping. A hinged gate swings between the arms of an enclosure, which can be semi-circular, square or v-shaped. Pushing it allows a walker to access a small enclosure. The gate is then moved to the opposite direction to close the first opening. The name comes from the fact that the gate kisses or touches the enclosure on the other side, rather than needing a latch or catch. The gate is usually self-closing.

However, at this time of year, there is a more romantic notion which we should remember. The first person who passes through the gate must close the gate before the next one can pass through – providing the opportunity to request a kiss in return for entry.
