Film locations in the Peak District
The beautiful rugged moors, edges and dams in the Peak District have inspired authors and filmmakers to set their stories here for generations. Great classics, including Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice were either fully or partially set on the moors or inspired by one of the stately homes, such as Chatsworth House or Haddon Hall. It’s not just the classics that have employed the Peak District as a backdrop for stories, remote locations have brought filmmakers with darker tales to tell as well.
If you want to experience some of this awe and wonder then a visit to Derbyshire could include one or more of the fantastic historic properties the county has to offer.
This magnificent house is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and has played host to the film version of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. It became the fictional home of Mr. Darcy – Pemberley. It was also the classic setting for The Duchess (Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes), and for the BBC adaptation of Jane Eyre. In 2010, the House was transformed into the crumbling Talbot Hall for The Wolfman staring Sir Antony Hopkins.
Have you ever wondered where Malfoy goes when he is not at Hogwarts? Well, his family home is Hardwick Hall, on a hillside near Chesterfield. The hall doubles as the dark and sinister Malfoy Manor in Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. The house was constructed by Bess of Hardwick in the 1590s and a local saying is “Hardwick Hall more glass than wall” due to the number and size of the windows. It is now owned and run by the National Trust.
This house has featured in many scenes in both television and film. Owned by the Manners family since 1567, this beautiful medieval manor house has been used on three occasions as Mr. Rochester’s Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre including the 2011 version staring Dame Judy Dench as the house keeper. Films that evoke the Tudor period including The Other Boleyn Girl and Elizabeth were also both were filmed here. Based on the William Goldman novel, The Princess Bride, this fairy tale adventure about a young woman and her one true love is filmed at Haddon Hall. The film was released in 1987 and still has a cult following.
The 18th century mansion with interiors by Robert Adams and extensive parkland was used as a key location for Hollywood blockbuster, The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes (2008). It was also the location for Ken Russell’s adaptation of DH Lawrence’s Women in Love (1969), which also featured Elvaston Castle near Derby. Recently the house served as John Clayton’s ancestral home, Greystoke Manor, in the 2015 film Tarzan staring Alexander Skarsgård. It is now owned and run by the National Trust.
Lyme features in the thriller, The Awakening (2011), staring Dominic West. Lyme doubles as a boy’s boarding school where hauntings need further investigation. However, Lyme is more famously known as being the home of Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. This BBC production features Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy. Following a long ride home Mr. Darcy dives into the lake and appears on the lawn in his wet shirt where he unexpectedly meets Miss Elizabeth Bennet. This has become one of the most popular scenes in British TV history. It is now owned and run by the National Trust.
We can offer discounted tickets for Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House (excluding special events).
